It wasn’t just that James Talarico won the U.S. Senate race or that Gina Hinojosa defeated Greg Abbott, the three-term governor. Up and down the ballot, Democrats swept Texas, winning all of the top statewide offices. They also flipped the Texas House of Representatives.

Every county in Texas shifted left, voting more Democratic than two years ago when President Trump was on the ballot. Rural counties like Jefferson in the Piney Woods region of deep red East Texas, Lubbock just south of the Panhandle and Midland in the Permian Basin, known as the epicenter of Texas oil and gas, all moved to the left. So did suburban counties outside Houston and Dallas. Even big cities, already centers of Democratic power, saw further gains.

Redistricting efforts undertaken by Republican state legislators to redraw a more favorable map left their own candidates vulnerable in a Democratic wave election. Democrats won four of the five districts that Republicans had redrawn to favor them, and they also reversed many of the gains Republicans made along the border in 2024. How counties voted In the race for U.S. Senate, every single county in Texas shifted toward Democrats.

In total, Democrats won 28 counties that voted for Mr. Trump in 2024. Here is a look at how counties that flipped this year voted in recent elections: One of the most notable shifts of the night happened in North Texas, where Democrats flipped several counties long considered centers of Republican power. Ken Paxton’s home base, Collin County, which was once considered so solidly red that it was called “Paxton country,” turned solidly blue.

Nearby Denton County also flipped. Tarrant County, the home of Fort Worth, went blue in 2018 and red in 2024. It saw a notable swing back toward Democrats — moving 24 points since 2024.

Mr. Talarico’s home base, where he was first elected by flipping a red Texas House seat in 2018, also went blue. Williamson County in Central Texas, near Austin, swung 22 points in the Democrat’s direction.

Republicans have always depended on rural Texas to keep them in power. But this year, every single rural county shifted to the left and 13 flipped from red to blue. All but one of those flipped counties are majority Hispanic, including the two rural counties in the Rio Grande Valley along the U.S.-Mexico border.

The one outlier was Brewster County, geographically the largest in the state and the home to Big Bend National Park. The beloved park, with its stark desert beauty, became a flashpoint in the election this year after the Trump administration tried to clear land and erect barriers to enforce its immigration policies. Voters there did not take kindly to the encroachment. They made their anger known at the ballot box, switching their votes from R to D.

How different groups voted Democrats made gains with nearly every demographic group around the state. This analysis was based on preliminary data from Times Voter Trends, which estimated the results of the 2026 election by age, race, education and gender for every state.

Young voters turned sharply away from Republicans — favoring Democrats by more than 40 points — after having drifted in the direction of Mr. Trump in 2024. Asian voters also moved dramatically toward Democrats. In 2026, some Republican Party members made the state’s swelling South Asian community a boogeyman, including warning of sharia law.

But the shift among Latino voters was most consequential for Texas, where Hispanic residents represent the state’s largest demographic group. Republicans had hoped that Texas Latinos were becoming a durable part of the conservative coalition after Mr. Trump won in Hispanic-majority districts across Texas. His success led Republicans to redraw congressional districts, assuming that Hispanic support would continue.

Instead, Democrats won Hispanic voters by 42 points on Tuesday.
