The Democratic Party has turned to so-called independent candidates in ruby-red states to overcome a weak brand and pick the Republican lock on US Senate seats. It never works and won’t this November, in part because voters, however intrigued, eventually realize there’s no such thing as an independent senator. In Idaho, Nebraska and South Dakota, the Democratic Party encouraged aspiring Senate contenders to clear a path for preferred independent candidates to challenge Republican incumbents head-to-head in the upcoming midterm elections. (The Democratic Party attempted the same strategy in Montana, but its nominee refused to leave the race.) Credit for ingenuity, at least.
Democrats haven’t won a Senate race in Idaho in more than half a century. Their futility in Nebraska and South Dakota dates back to 2006 and 2008, respectively. They have absolutely nothing to lose by running Senate candidates unburdened by the party’s toxic image. But lose the Democrats shall — most likely — no matter how low President Donald Trump’s job approval ratings sink or how disastrous 2026 has been for the Republican Party. It’s another stark reminder of the GOP’s structural advantage in the battle for Senate control that could preserve their hold on the chamber even if a blue wave crashes on Election Day. The quality of the independent challengers that Democrats are relying on to win is not the problem.
In Idaho, Todd Achilles, a likable Army veteran whose quirky campaign videos have attracted attention on social media, is running against Republican Senator James Risch. In South Dakota, Brian Bengs, a pugnacious Air Force veteran who has made local control of AI data center development a centerpiece of his campaign, is running against Republican Senator Mike Rounds. In Nebraska, polls actually show Dan Osborn, a Navy veteran with a populist, everyman appeal, in a competitive race with Republican Senator Pete Ricketts. The problem certainly isn’t that voters are offended by independent candidates in principle. There’s a reason Democrats and Republicans running as political outsiders, and against the party establishments, have had increasing success in recent years. Voters have soured on both parties, with national surveys showing the Democratic and Republican brands equally battered.
But those same voters are rather sophisticated. And in Idaho, Nebraska and South Dakota, where most voters are culturally and philosophically conservative, they’re likely to see Achilles, Bengs and Osborn for who they are: Democratic proxies who would help topple the GOP’s 53-47 Senate majority. The past reinforces that view.
Achilles, a former Republican, was elected to a term in the Idaho Legislature as a Democrat, and Bengs was a Democrat when he ran for US Senate in South Dakota in 2022. To be fair, both insist they would not affiliate with either the Democratic caucus or the Republican conference should they win Nov. 3. Ditto Osborn, who at the very least can boast that he’s never been aed member of either party. “I’m going to caucus with everybody,” he told reporters during a September visit to Washington, DC, according to Roll Call. Those promises, however admirable, may not take the candidates very far.
Even if independent candidates can get elected, there’s zero chance either party’s leadership grants them plum committee assignments. Indeed, Democratic and Republican leaders in the Senate can be counted on to use panel slots as an enticement for affiliation. Committees are often where senators can have the greatest input on legislation, not to mention which states receive coveted federal funding for state and local projects.
That’s a big deal in all states but especially in smaller, significantly rural states like Idaho, Nebraska and South Dakota. They host military installations and their economies are fueled by farming. They’re also typically more impacted by government regulations and appropriations than heavily populated states that enjoy a diverse tax base. So yes, having a senator who serves on the agriculture, appropriations, armed services, and energy and natural resources committees really matters. Once voters understand the practical stakes in electing an independent, any political threat to the Republican should subside — especially because he better reflects his state’s political proclivities.
This explains why independent candidates elected in the recent past ran as allies of the party most popular among voters in their states. It’s why the only independents currently serving in the Senate, Angus King of Maine and Bernie Sanders of Vermont, are both functional Democrats.

Democrats are otherwise enjoying a banner year in red-state Senate contests and may yet win the majority with possible victories in states previously presumed safe for the GOP: Alaska, Iowa, Ohio, Texas and even Kansas. Ironically, all of the party’s candidates in those states are running as Democrats.
