Chancellor John Healey said he will “stay the path” on plans to bring down borrowing over the next few years as he welcomed the International Monetary Fund’s support for the government’s fiscal plans ahead of the budget.

“I’m pleased the IMF here in Bangkok have backed our economic plans in London,” he said to broadcasters as he arrived for the fund’s annual meetings in Thailand on Thursday morning.

“They say the UK stands out on growth despite the deep economic shocks that are affecting worldwide at present,” Healey said. “They also say it’s important to stay the path. And I will follow that as I prepare my budget in two weeks’ time.”Healey delivers his first budget on Oct. 28 having replaced Rachel Reeves after former Prime Minister Keir Starmer stepped down in the summer to make way for Andy Burnham.

He has stressed that he will maintain fiscal discipline at the budget while also providing “breathing space” for struggling households and businesses. The fund has urged Healey to ensure any giveaways are temporary and targeted.

He attended the meeting of G20 finance ministers and central bank governors on Thursday morning and will meet with the Group of Seven finance ministers and IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva. He is expected to have talks with Saudi Arabian Finance Minister Mohammed Al-Jadaan, Australia’s Treasurer Jim Chalmers, Qatari Finance Minister Ali bin Ahmed Al Kuwari and South Korea Deputy Prime Minister Lee Hyoung-il.

Healey, a former UK defense secretary, also urged finance ministers to continue support for Ukraine and “stay the path on tough economic sanctions on Russia, especially a tighter ban on shipping services that helps Putin’s sanctions busting shadow fleet to operate.”The UK will provide nearly £20 million alongside France and the US to help repair the Chernobyl nuclear power plant that was recently hit by Russian drones.
