Russia looks more inclined to intensify its war in Ukraine rather than end it, Romanian President Nicusor Dan said, pointing to the rising number of provocations by the Kremlin inside the European Union.
“The Russians are trying to escalate, to provoke all the European countries,” Dan told Bloomberg Television and Radio on Thursday. “We don’t have to go into this escalation process.”NATO members have concluded that it’s necessary to be better prepared, “in order to answer to this provocation and stay calm,” he said.
Despite repeated diplomatic pushes for peace, the conflict in Ukraine is now nearing five years. The latest efforts toward an accord are coming from the US, though President Donald Trump appears to be putting the onus on Ukraine rather than on Russia to strike an agreement.
While Dan hopes Trump will manage to broker a deal between the two, he doesn’t see Russia being ready currently.
While that remains the case, EU member states including Romania are striving to de-escalate the situation while also readying themselves for hybrid attacks from Moscow including drone incursions, cyberattacks, disinformation, he said.
“We want to keep calm and shoot down the drones that arrive to our territory and our territorial waters,” Dan said.
