Amnesty International says Sudan's Rapid Support Forces paramilitary continues to detain, torture and kill civilians in El Fasher, a year after the group seized the Darfur city from the national army. The group is demanding independent access.
Amnesty International said on Friday that Sudan's paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) are still detaining, torturing and killing civilians in El Fasher, a year after seizing the Darfur city from the national army. The rights group said it had gathered testimony describing arbitrary arrests, beatings and extrajudicial killings carried out in makeshift detention sites across the city.
Amnesty called on the international community to press for independent access to El Fasher so that allegations of abuse can be verified, and urged both warring parties to allow humanitarian workers safe passage. The RSF has not publicly responded to the specific allegations.
The report adds to a wider pattern of accusations against both sides in Sudan's civil war, which has displaced millions of people since fighting between the army and the RSF erupted in 2023. Rights groups and the United Nations have repeatedly raised alarm over attacks on civilians in Darfur and other regions as the conflict continues with no clear resolution in sight.
