A French man accused of a mass shooting with a submachine gun targeted “black people and Arabs” in revenge for looting during last weekend’s riots.

On Friday, one man was killed and five others were injured, including a 12-year-old girl, in a drive-by shooting in the Paris suburb of Trappes. The government has described the incident as a racially motivated terror attack. None of the victims were white.

The main suspect, identified as Kevin T, said he had singled out black and Arab people because he had been “fed up with them” after shops in Paris were ransacked during student and Yellow Vest protests, according to Le Monde.

Officials collect evidence following the shooting in Trappes The suspect was arrested after driving to the neighbouring commune of La Verrière and confessed to being motivated by a racist ideology. Police found a submachine gun and tear-gas grenades in his car. They also seized cocaine from the vehicle, and a toxicology test revealed the presence of cannabis and cocaine in his blood, Le Parisien reported.

The newspaper said unnamed police sources had described the man’s demeanour as “stoic” and “very calm” upon his arrest.

Police had to call in minesweepers before conducting a search of the suspect’s home in Plaisir, which had been booby-trapped with gas cylinders and electrical wires connected to a timer, according to the National Anti-Terrorism Prosecutor’s Office. Police discovered a copy of Mein Kampf, a Bible and a Koran in the suspect’s home.

Forensic police in Trappes. Authorities say that the attack was racially motivated On Sunday, the suspect was released from police custody to undergo psychiatric assessment, drawing criticism from the lawyer representing the family of the victim, Pengo Bossio Wangi, 26, an amateur MMA fighter who died in the attack.

Yassine Bouzrou, the lawyer, described a “worrying pattern” in which psychiatric assessments are used as a “convenient shortcut to avoid naming the ideology that fuels the violence”.

“When the attack comes from the far-Right, the psychiatric issue is raised very quickly,” Mr Bouzrou told Le Parisien. “The perpetrator is ‘necessarily a deranged individual’. This question, however, is almost never raised with the same insistence when the attack is Islamist-motivated.”

People, including Sofienne Karroumi, right, the mayor of Aubervilliers, take part in a silent march in tribute to Mr Wangi A sign at the march reads: ‘Stop to racism, all united against racism, rest in peace’ Ritsia Wangi, the victim’s sister, said she and her family learned of her brother’s death from a journalist who contacted her father and told him his son had been shot dead in a racist attack.

“He died a terrible death. He died all alone,” she told independent media Blast. “It really was a barrage of relentless gunfire.”Several marches and rallies have been organised in the coming days to commemorate the victims and protest against the rise of the far-Right National Rally, which anti-racism activists accuse of fuelling race-based hate.

“I have faith. I’m a Christian, and he was too,” Ms Wangi said. “So I have faith that a miracle will happen, because otherwise, I can’t see myself carrying on.”
