Serbia’s student-led movement that’s poised to take power after last month’s election, is urging banks to step up scrutiny of capital flows from the country during the transition period to a new government.
By Misha Savic The Student List said in a statement issued late Saturday that the transition requires “increased supervision and control of cross-border financial transactions and potential flight of capital from the country.”The appeal does not aim to limit “legal business activities,” but to preserve “financial integrity, responsibility and transparency during the transition period,” the bloc added.
The appeal comes shortly after Serbia’s central bank revoked the license of Alta Bank AD following suspicious outflows from the lender in the days following the October 25 election. While the lender is part of Serbia’s closely held Alta Group, most other top banks in the Balkan country are foreign-owned.

Serbian Politics Enter New Era With Leaderless Bloc in Power The Student List was formed from the backers of mass anti-government protests that gripped Serbia for nearly two years before the snap election that ousted long-serving leader Aleksandar Vucic. It won a majority in the 250-seat parliament with pledges to root out corruption and investigate contracts awarded by the outgoing regime, including for large infrastructure projects.
Earlier on Sunday, Marko Kricko, the head of Serbia’s Criminal Police department, was arrested over his alleged role in a murder case following an order from the Higher Public Prosecutor’s Office, the state broadcaster RTS reported The Student List is yet to name its candidate for prime minister, while a full transfer of power also requires the election commission to formally verify the result. A repeat ballot is being held Sunday at 53 polling stations due to alleged irregularities in last week’s election but is unlikely to change the overall outcome.
