Regarding your editorial “To Brazil’s Victor Goes Political Revenge” (Oct. 28): The order to seize defeated presidential candidate Flavio Bolsonaro’s passport didn’t come from Brazilian President Luiz Inácio “Lula” da Silva’s government. It was a judicial decision, issued by Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes, who was appointed to the court by former President Michel Temer. The case is before the court only because Mr. Bolsonaro, as a sitting Senator, must be investigated by that court.

But this isn’t a case of choosing the man and finding the crime. Mr. Bolsonaro is under formal investigation in two separate cases for money laundering and corruption—in connection with the largest bank fraud in Brazilian history. That investigation remains open, and new findings may emerge. Mr. Bolsonaro hasn’t been charged, but he chose to defy a court order and leave the country.
