Senate races in Mississippi and Alaska remain too close to call Races for two Senate seats remained too close to call Wednesday morning.
In Alaska's race, incumbent Republican Sen. Dan Sullivan held a narrow lead over Democratic challenger Mary Peltola, according to the Associated Press.
Also running for Alaska's Senate seat are Gerald L. Heikes and Daniel J. Sullivan Jr. Peltola's campaign was accused of helping to orchestrate the inclusion of a candidate with a similar name as the incumbent in an effort to confuse voters and siphon off votes from the incumbent. Peltola denied she had anything to do with the second Sullivan running in the race. The controversy sparked lawsuits and investigations.
Peltola held a considerable lead over Sen. Sullivan early Tuesday, but the incumbent overtook the Democrat overnight. Both candidates remain below the 50% threshold required to avoid the ranked choice voting process. This means the outcome of the race may not be known for weeks.
In the system, voters rank the four finalists in order of their preference. If no one gets more than 50% of the vote, the weakest candidate is eliminated, and the second-choice votes on those ballots are redistributed to the remaining candidates. The process continues until someone has a majority, the Wall Street Journal reported.
On Wednesday morning, Heikes held 2.2% of the vote, and Daniel J. Sullivan held 1.7% of the vote.
In the Mississippi Senate race, Democrat Scott Colm, a local prosecutor, and Republican incumbent Cindy Hyde-Smith were running neck-in-neck Wednesday morning with both candidates holding 48.9% of the vote. Independent candidate Ty Pinkins held 2.1% of the vote.
Should Colom succeed in the race, he would be the state's first Black senator since post-Civil War Reconstruction Era.
