Ofer Cassif, a member of the Israeli Knesset from the Arab Joint List, said the alliance would likely recommend that opposition Yashar party leader Gadi Eisenkot be tasked with forming a government to prevent outgoing Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu from forming another one.
He said the alliance would also work with other opposition parties to replace Knesset Speaker Amir Ohana.
In an interview with Anadolu, Cassif said the Joint List was open to working with Israeli opposition parties but had seen little willingness on their part to cooperate.
“The main problem is that, unfortunately, many figures within the opposition hold racist views. They reject any form of cooperation with Arab citizens and their representatives,” Cassif said.
“Of course, I don’t want to generalize. This doesn’t apply to everyone in the opposition, but unfortunately it applies to many of them,” he added.
“They seek to undermine any cooperation and completely reject the idea of building a coalition that relies on the votes of Arab voters. That is the central issue,” he said.
“But I hope, and indeed believe, that Eisenkot will eventually realize that the greatest danger, both to Israelis and to the region as a whole, comes from Netanyahu himself and his fascist allies.
“When the other parties realize this, they will understand that they have no choice but to cooperate to bring down the current government. That does not necessarily mean agreeing on many issues. We in the Joint List are fully aware that the next government will not be to our liking and will be very far from our views and beliefs,” Cassif said.
“Still, we know that the main enemy right now is Netanyahu and his cronies, and we must do everything we can to remove him from power.”Earlier Wednesday, Israel’s Central Elections Committee certified the final results of the Oct. 27 Knesset elections. Fifteen members voted in favor, two voted against and 14 abstained. The previously announced seat allocation remained unchanged.
Netanyahu’s bloc won 53 seats, compared with 48 for the Israeli opposition bloc and 19 for the Arab lists, including 11 for the Joint List and eight for the United Arab List, also known as Ra’am. Neither bloc secured the 61 seats needed for a majority in the 120-seat Knesset.
The Israeli opposition and the Arab lists together have enough seats to form a government, but significant parts of the opposition reject a partnership or cooperation with the Arab parties.
President Isaac Herzog was scheduled to begin consultations with parliamentary factions Wednesday after receiving the official election results.
Asked about the possibility of an Eisenkot-led minority government with outside support from the Arab parties, Cassif said: “Something like that. I think there is still a long way to go before we get to that stage. It looks like we will recommend to the president that he task Eisenkot with forming the government in two days, on Thursday.”“We still have two days to discuss it, but that seems to be the direction we are taking. It is also clear that we will join other opposition parties in replacing the Knesset speaker,” he added.
“I hope we succeed, because the current speaker, Amir Ohana, along with others, has acted over the past four years more like a representative, or perhaps a servant, of Netanyahu and the governing coalition, when it should have been the other way around. He did not really represent the Knesset. He represented the government against the Knesset, as if the Knesset were hostile to him.”“We have to replace him, and there is a parliamentary majority to do so. The problem is that I think the speaker, Netanyahu and other fascists will try to stop it,” Cassif said.
“In that case, I think we will have to go to the Supreme Court. The court will likely back our efforts and confirm that we have the legitimacy and authority to replace him, and then we will do so.”Cassif said there were several steps before that point and that the Joint List expected many disagreements with the next government. He described Netanyahu and his allies as the “greatest danger” to Israel, the Palestinians and the wider region, and said the alliance was committed to removing them from power.
Asked about high Arab turnout, Cassif said Arab citizens of Israel felt that their very existence was at stake after four years under a government he described as “fascist,” particularly in the three years since October 2023.
He pointed to Israeli “atrocities” in Gaza and the West Bank, as well as growing fascism within Israel and the persecution of Arab citizens, who he said make up 20% of the population.
Cassif said attempts to disqualify the Joint List and the United Arab List, as well as his own candidacy and that of Sami Abu Shehadeh, had driven Arab citizens to vote. He also cited “systematic” home demolitions.
“They realized that their lives, their very existence, were under threat. On the other hand, there was the reestablishment of the Joint List. We finally managed to announce it, which was what the vast majority of the Arab public in Israel had been waiting for. That gave Palestinians a glimmer of hope,” he said.
“So you could say it was essentially a mixture of fear and hope, or pessimism and optimism if you prefer. There was fear of another fascist, racist government that would commit genocide, and hope that we could succeed through the Joint List, which is what happened.”Cassif accused Netanyahu and his Likud party of trying to delegitimize the election results by promoting unsubstantiated claims of foreign interference.
“We know that whenever there is a chance to replace a dictator, even one who came to power through elections, as happens in Hungary and elsewhere, he will do everything he can to question the legitimacy of the election results,” he said.
Netanyahu and other right-wing leaders questioned the results and called for their announcement to be delayed. The elections committee proceeded with announcing the final results Wednesday and handed them to Herzog.
Right-wing leaders accused Arab parties of receiving funding from Qatar to mobilize voters. Doha and the parties denied the allegations.
“We saw exactly the same thing in the 2022 elections. Before polling day, Likud sensed it might lose and immediately began planning to challenge the legitimacy of the results,” Cassif said.
“Likud promoted claims, particularly targeting Arabs, that there were plans to rig the vote. On election day itself, they kept saying there were serious suspicions of fraud, but they stopped as soon as they realized they had won.”Cassif said Likud had been planning for a similar scenario for weeks and that he had personally warned about it for months. He said the party continued to promote “false claims” the day after the election, when it became clear that turnout had been very high.
He said that the police and security agencies, including the Shin Bet, had colluded with Netanyahu and his allies, but they ultimately had to acknowledge that no fraud or manipulation had occurred.
“That does not change the fact that Likud, with its fascist approach, sought to question the legitimacy of the results,” he said. “And why do they always focus on Palestinian voters? Because it is easy to use them as scapegoats.”Cassif said he feared Netanyahu could launch another war against Iran to stay in office.
“First of all, I am deeply concerned about any kind of war, anywhere and at any time. The risks are very serious,” he said.
“They both have a personal interest in launching a war, regardless of who is on the other side,” he said, referring to Netanyahu and US President Donald Trump. “Iran is just an arbitrary choice here. It could have been any other country.”“I hope nothing like this happens, especially given the domestic opposition in both Israel and the US. Perhaps for the first time, even centrist parties and some right-wing parties in Israel realize that launching a war against Iran serves only Netanyahu’s interest in staying in power and does nothing for Israel’s interests,” Cassif said.
“That is why I firmly believe a national unity government is highly unlikely. I hope I am right. Of course, I could be wrong.”
