"It is unacceptable for a country like Spain to suffer two high-speed rail accidents in the same year." With a grave expression, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez tried to grasp the scale of the new tragedy that had struck his country.

On Wednesday, October 28, the collision between two high-speed trains near Toledo, south of Madrid, left – according to a still provisional toll – 68 dead and 107 injured, 18 of them in critical condition. Just nine months after the Adamuz disaster in Andalusia, which killed 46 and left more than 150 injured, the tragedy has reignited concerns over the state and safety of Spain's rail network.

"We will get to the bottom of this. If there was negligence, we will find out, and if there were failures in the safety system, we will respond with the utmost determination," said Sanchez from the command post set up near the accident site. The head of government pledged to take "all necessary measures" to "restore confidence in our high-speed rail system" and to reinforce passenger safety. Three days of national mourning were declared.

As in Adamuz on January 18, the accident involved two trains on the Madrid-Seville line, but under very different circumstances. On Wednesday at 8:53 am, an AVE train operated by the Spanish public company Renfe rear-ended a train run by the private operator Iryo, a subsidiary of the Italian rail company Trenitalia. Both trains were heading toward Seville, carrying a total of 544 passengers.
