Colombia halted interest rate increases as signs of an economic slowdown offset fears over accelerating inflation. The central bank’s seven-member board held the benchmark rate at 12.25% in a split decision, Governor Leonardo Villar told reporters after the meeting.
Seventeen of 31 surveyed by Bloomberg forecast the decision, while the rest had expected a quarter-point increase.
The economy is losing momentum after a prolonged period of high interest rates. Activity contracted slightly in August for the first time since April 2025, while manufacturing and retail sales were weaker than expected.

Inflation, however, accelerated to 6.29% in September, and central bank forecasts show it remaining above the upper end of the target range through 2027, extending a run of misses to seven consecutive years.
Fiscal uncertainty is adding to the bank’s challenge. On Thursday, the government sent Congress an “economic rescue” bill aimed at addressing concerns over the government’s growing debt load. While the plan includes significant spending cuts, it faces resistance over proposals to broaden the VAT and income-tax bases and raise social-security contributions.
The bill is part of a broader effort to stabilize Colombia’s finances that also includes talks with the International Monetary Fund over potential financial support.
