Democrats seized the House and Senate by wider margins that even party leaders had hoped in a wave election that served as a referendum on President Donald Trump.
Democratic House candidates took districts Trump won by double digits just two years ago.
They flipped Senate seats nationwide, including in Iowa, Kansas, Maine, Ohio, North Carolina, South Carolina and Texas. Competitive races haven’t been called in Michigan and Alaska, where Democrats could run up the score further.
Trump told The New York Times on Wednesday night that he “was absolutely willing” to accept the results of the election.
Democrats racked up stunning victories across the South. In Texas, James Talarico defeated Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton to become the first Democrat to win a Senate seat in the state since 1988. Democrat Gina Hinojosa toppled incumbent Republican Gov. Greg Abbott, becoming the first Democrat to take the governor’s mansion since Ann Richards in 1990.
Gov. Roy Cooper of North Carolina won a Senate seat in his state, pulling off what no Democrat has there in 18 years. In South Carolina, Annie Andrews defeated Darline Graham, winning the seat formerly held by Lindsey Graham. Sen. Jon Ossoff held onto his seat in Georgia.
Democrats scored victories across the Midwest, too. Adam Hamilton defeated Republican Sen. Roger Marshall in Kansas, overcoming a 94-year drought for Democrats in the state. In Iowa, Josh Turek beat Rep. Ashley Hinson to fill retiring Republican Sen. Joni Ernst’s seat. In Ohio, Sherrod Brown unseated Republican Sen. Jon Husted.
Chris Pappas held retiring Sen. Jeanne Shaheen’s seat for Democrats in New Hampshire.
Republican Maine Sen. Susan Collins conceded to her Democratic opponent, Troy Jackson. Polls in Alaska remain open until 1 am EST.
Republicans held onto a Senate seat in Florida. Trump, reportedly watching returns from the White House, criticized Fox News coverage before most polls had closed. In a social media post Trump said Republicans would have had a better night if he’d been on the ballot.
Democrats won other gubernatorial races in red states. Keisha Lance Bottoms won the gubernatorial race in Georgia, a first for a Democrat in 28 years — a positive sign for Ossoff if he decides to pursue a 2028 presidential bid, since she would appoint his successor.
Democrat Amy Acton defeated Republican Vivek Ramaswamy, endorsed by Trump, to become the next governor of Ohio. Ramaswamy aired a late attack ad against Acton featuring her estranged mother, who backed her husband when Acton accused him of rape as a child.
Ossoff, who Republicans had hoped to unseat this year, easily blew past GOP rival Rep. Mike Collins to win re-election. Pappas prevailed over former GOP Sen. John Sununu in another race that Republicans had initially hoped to contest. In North Carolina, Cooper scored the party’s first pickup of the night.
House Republicans are also faltering in Florida, where three seats drawn to elect Republicans have so far gone to Democrats — re-elections for Reps. Jared Moskowitz and Kathy Castor, plus a victory for Rep.-elect Pia Dandiya. The GOP initially redistricted to try to gain four new House seats.
All three of the Florida districts that Democrats have won so far on Tuesday night backed Trump in 2024. Urged to embark on mid-decade redistricting by Trump, Florida GOP Gov. Ron DeSantis has warned that his party was losing some of its advantages, driven by voter anger about the war in Iran.
As the night got better and better for Democrats, I started to hear them ask: Had they built a new national majority? Had they banished MAGA for good? Then they reminded themselves: Thinking like that is what got Republicans into this mess. Two Trump victories, and a 2020 loss that kept most of his coalition intact, convinced many conservatives that they had built a new party system that combined working class voters of all races, the social conservatives who made their local parties run, and the business community that rejected Trump after Jan. 6 but came running back in 2024. Who could beat that?
Well, now we know. The Trump coalition came apart on Tuesday, with the president decisively unable to put himself “on the ballot” and turn out his unlikely voters. Plenty of signs were there during early voting – especially in North Carolina, a killing field where Republicans lost House and state legislative seats that were gerrymandered to be impossible to lose. (On a map drawn to elect three Democrats, the party is likely to win nine seats.)
Democrats didn’t pretend that they had solved all their parties’ problems. But they did learn from Trump’s first term, and the way they miscalculated what a fluke he was. Instead of moving to the left, betting that a more excited base could overwhelm MAGA, they nominated candidates who were willing to break with left-wing orthodoxy – Iowa Sen.-elect Josh Turek adopting a more conservative position on gender, Texas Sen.-elect James Talarico becoming a booster of the energy industry.
Their base was so furious at Trump that it was relatively easy to turn out. Persuasion was harder, but they got there; Democrats won back northeast Ohio, eastern Iowa, Texas’s Rio Grande Valley, and even parts of Florida that seemed to be racing away from their party.
And Republicans couldn’t change the electorate. Trump wasn’t on the ballot, obviously – but for the first time, voters did not credit Trump with good management of the economy or with keeping America out of wars. The snazziest GOP bumper sticker of the Biden years was “I’d take some mean tweets and cheap gas right now.”Without cheap gas, voters weren’t willing to put up with Trump’s AI memes, jokes about men’s asses, and obsession with building a triumphant arch in Arlington.
Finally, Republicans had a failure of imagination. Any reporter who covered the 2016 election remembers the disbelief, even anger, from Democrats who were told that Trump could win the Midwest. It was impossible, until it happened. And Republicans who’d been told that Texas could flip in 2014, 2016, 2018, 2020, and 2022 could not imagine James Talarico – the “God is nonbinary” guy? – breaking the curse.
Talarico is on track to lead a Democratic sweep of Texas statewide offices, cutting down some of the most powerful politicians in the state’s history. Democrats held onto the suburban gains they made from 2016 to 2020, then won back many of the place that no Democrat had won since Barack Obama. They are less afraid of Trump than of any time since the week before the 2016 election.
